What is a Pattu Pavadai or a Langa Voni?


In the Southern part of India, the ethnic wear that establishes a distinction between a married and unmarried woman is Patty Pavadai. It is also known as Langa Voni. This dress is worn by young girls until they marry. Hence, this attire is the symbol of the singlehood of females in the South. This dress essentially consists of a full - length skirt and a blouse. The fabric material used as the base of this attire is usually Silk. Across the four states of the Southern region in India, a Pattu Pavadai is recognized by various names. While people in Karnataka call it Langa Dawani, that of Tamil Nadu refer to it as Pattu Pavadai and in Andhra Pradesh is known as Langa Lovni. Also, there are various Pattu Pavadai stitching designs one can opt for depending on their preference. These come in various shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns. 

The origin of Pattu Pavadai


The Dravidian culture, unlike others, has remained majorly uninfluenced from outside cultures. The origin of Pattu Pavadai also dates backs to the Dravidian era. When Silk was discovered, silk sarees and Pattu Pavadai also came into existence. A Pattu Pavadai closely resembles a saree. The dupatta accompanying the Pattu Pavadai is draped similarly to a saree. The borders of the Pavadai and the patterns on it are similar to a saree.
